The Catholic community of Sarawak will be opening a new international school which is set to open its doors to foreign and local students in January 2017.
The school, named St Joseph’s International School will offer education for Year 7 (equivalent to Form 1) and classes will start in January 2017. The new school was granted a licence last November by the Ministry of Education.
A permanent school would be built on a 15-acre site in the Muara Tuang Land District, Kota Samarahan with the first phase of the new school costing RM17.5 million.
The new Catholic international school will share the same board of directors as St Joseph’s Private School and will be managed by a religious congregation assisted by a team of trained, experienced and dedicated teachers.
It is understood that the school would be a full-fledged boarding school once its facilities are completed. Aside from classrooms, the school will have academic and recreational facilities such as design and technology labs, music rooms, lecture theater, a hall, chapel, football field and basketball court.
The school offers the Cambridge syllabus leading to the Cambridge ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels examinations and all subjects will be taught in English. Malaysian citizens are required to study Bahasa Melayu, Islamic Studies/Moral Studies and Malaysian History. Class sizes will be limited to 25 pupils per class.
The school will be single session co-ed school and lessons will be conducted from 7.30am to 3.30pm, followed by extra-curricular activities.
Development of soft skills such as creative arts – music, drama and dance, and the nurturing of interpersonal skills and leadership qualities will also be provided through holistic education.
The school will cost MYR17.5 million to be built and the first phase of the school would be ready by 2018. Until then, students enrolling in the school will undergo their studies at SK St Theresa in Padungan.
